Staying securely connected on the road
Staying connected no matter where you are has become a fact of life. Like many of us, you’ve probably found yourself in a car, RV, or boat that has doubled as your second home or office at some point. The lines between work and travel have blurred. But one constant remains unchanged: reliable internet access no matter where you are.
Protectli can help save you from the hassle of using unsecured public WiFi, consuming your precious cell phone data and battery life via mobile hotspot, hoping that your office VPN is reachable over a spotty connection, or worst of all – an LTE dead zone. Protectli has the plug-and-play hardware solution to keep you and everyone around you connected.
Protectli can provide the necessary building blocks of an open source connectivity solution, from wifi enabled firewalls, to cellular modems, to battery backup for running off-grid!

The Vault Ecosystem: Open-Source and Flexible
To ensure that everything including your family’s phones, laptops, PSPs, iPads, Kindles, and media servers can all rely on the same trusted internet connection, purpose-built and modular hardware is needed for the core of your implementation.
Modularity: Physically separating the pieces of your mobile network allows for the most flexibility and strategic placement to help everything work as reliably as possible. For example, your cellular modem should be placed in a area that has the best LTE reception, which may not be close to where your family and your wifi should be. Protectli’s discrete devices allow you to place the components of your network in the most ideal location possible.
Energy-efficient: Power comes at a premium while on the road so Protectli hardware aims to be energy-efficient. A typical Vault running a common open source firewall solution like OPNsense, only consumes around 10 Watts. Plus, all Protectli Vaults are powered by 12V DC, so you can either use available 12V DC power in your off-grid setup, or our included power supply. We even offer a compact Uninterruptible Power Supply with up to 88.8Wh of capacity which can keep your network up and running for hours without external power.
Compact, rugged, and silent: Due to space constraints, a small footprint comes in handy. Plus, the tech will likely be placed right in the living area so you want to avoid noisy fans. The Vault is a robust, all metal computer that has no fans or other moving parts.
Privacy: At Protectli, love privacy and open source, and our Vaults are purpose built with this in mind. Open Source firewall OS’s such as OPNsense or pfSense are ideal for use on a Vault, and they can easily be set up to run a whole network VPN to keep your family’s internet browsing encrypted and safe from cellular operators. The Vault even comes with the option of running coreboot – an open source firmware tailored to each Vault.
Flexibility: Looking to use one device for multiple purposes? Manage multiple connections, run virtual servers, containers, even add a Plex server for self-hosted entertainment while on the road. Avoid the limitations of underpowered solutions like a Raspberry Pi or pre-built single purpose devices such as Pepwave. The Vault can be custom-configured to your liking so there is no need to leave the home lab at home.
How we can help
Securing your network with Open Source OS & BIOS.
Meet: The Vault
The Vault is compact, quiet and built on reliable components: Get Intel CPUs & NICs, and SSDs throughout.
Every Vault can be custom-configured and is available as 2-Port, 4-Port and 6-Port models. To choose the right Vault for you, we recommend starting with our Buyer’s Guide.
With a dedicated hardware firewall like the Vault, you will get faster response times and better load handling. In turn this also won’t affect system performance or speed of your computer.

Max security with custom OS & BIOS
All Vaults are OS agnostic and support the popular open source firewall distros like pfSense, OPNsense, Untangle etc. Or you can roll your own based on Linux or FreeBSD.
With its own operating system, you are able to set enhanced security controls and are less prone to attacks.
On top of that, we offer the Vault pre-configured with coreboot, an open source device firmware for maximum security, transparency, and audit-ability.
